Earthbox- The No Fuss Gardening System

April 11, 2009

The Earthbox’s own tagline is a bit much: “The World’ Most Revolutionary Gardening System!” The black plastic boxes come with generally positive recommendations, but they’re not magic—their main trick is keeping a reservoir of water at the bottom, letting plants wick it up as they need it, while keeping the soil at the surface dry and hardy against bacteria and bugs.

While the brand-name Earthboxes aren’t terribly expensive—around $60, and that includes some soil and fertilizer—building a similar box yourself isn’t a huge undertaking, either. (Here’s another variant.) Cut apart one Rubbermaid tub, put its guts inside another, add some drain holes and a fill tube, and you’re on your way to big tomatoes and eggplants and cukes with a minimum of effort.

Ecotones- Noises are now nice to hear

November 4, 2008

Silicon Valley start-up Adaptive Sound Technologies is out with its first product, Ecotones. It’s an adaptive noise-masking machine that blends with the audio in your specific environment to create a relaxing individually crafted soundscape called a “SoundStory.

Primary audio tracks are mixed with hundreds of individual secondary sounds in a pseudo-random way to create audio that’s less repetitive than that of the typical sound-dimming machine or CD. The company says its audio backgrounds are so vivid and realistic (listen to a few of them yourself below) you’ll forget the unit’s in the room.

The unit measures a compact 6.125 inches x 7.5 inches x 5.5 inches and has a frequency range of 90Hz to 20,000Hz. A headphone jack enables private listening as well as connection to an external stereo or audio amplifier. Also included is an adjustable sleep timer. You have to pay a price of around  $300 for all the soft music you hear out of noises.

USB made from recycled material

September 22, 2008

A month ago Earthdrive’s eco-friendly usb drive claimed to be the world’s first completely green drive. Well looks like it’s about to get a little competition with this new usb drive. The new drive is made out of recycled newspapers. Yes it is excessively bland looking and if you lay it on a wood desk with similar coloring it will blend in easily with its surroundings making it harder to spot. There’s just not a whole lot about the drive that makes it stand out. Yet, it is made out of recycled materials which will likely draw in the more environmentally conscious.

The drive doesn’t have a lot of perks to it. Stacked against the EarthDrive, the EarthDrive is made from bio-recycled plastics so they are even there. Yet EarthDrive takes it farther and is also a recyclable drive and when you purchase one a portion of the proceeds go to American Forests. In all fairness though, I don’t know many people that would go out of their way to recycle a tiny USB drive. This new drive does come in 16GB, so it does come a bit larger than the EarthDrive. Sadly there is no word on pricing yet, so there is no way to know if this drive is going to cost a fortune or not.
